Due to the extreme operating conditions to which these units are systematically exposed, it is quite common that, upon unloading, they require some form of maintenance — whether on secondary structures or even on primary structural elements.
The identification or recommendation of such repairs may occur through preventive inspections or during the annual periodic inspection carried out by the classification society’s inspector.
Among the most common repairs are:
-
Reinforcement or replacement of damaged structural supports;
-
Welding of cracks or fissures in critical points of the primary structure;
-
Repair or replacement of corroded components;
-
Inspection and replacement of fastening elements (bolts, nuts, clamps);
-
Correction of misalignments or deformations in metal structures;
-
Treatment and repainting of areas with deficiencies in the anti-corrosion protection system.
These repairs are essential to ensure structural integrity, operational safety, and compliance with applicable technical standards.

In accordance with item 17 of the annex to MSC/Circ. 860, issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), periodic inspections are mandatory for all offshore containers, including offshore portable tanks and their respective lifting assemblies.
These inspections must be conducted at regular intervals not exceeding 12 months, with the purpose of ensuring that the equipment maintains its structural integrity, functionality, and compliance with the technical and safety requirements established by applicable international standards.
During the periodic inspection, the following aspects, among others, are evaluated:
-
Condition of the external structure (presence of cracks, deformations, corrosion, or mechanical damage);
-
Integrity of lifting points (lifting eyes, shackles, pins, and welds);
-
Effectiveness of the anti-corrosion protection system (painting, galvanization, sacrificial anodes);
-
Identification and legibility of mandatory markings (serial number, maximum capacity, date of last inspection, etc.);
-
Operation of valves, caps, and safety devices, in the case of portable tanks;
-
Compliance with the design and operational criteria established in the original certification.
Proper execution of these inspections is essential to ensure the safety of offshore operations, prevent structural failures, and guarantee the continuity of equipment certification before regulatory authorities and classification societies.
